Red-eared Slider Turtle

Trachemys scripta elegans

Exotic species at large!

  • Originally from south-east America, it is an exoctic species that was introduced to Quebec. Its introduction can be detrimental for the indigenous species with whom it is in competition for food, egg-laying sites, wintering sites and sun exposure sites.
  • It is identified thanks to the red or orange colored elongated spot present behind the eye. This spot fades over time and can almost disappear in old males.
